This is just a quick one. Started to rain here and it's getting late, but I just tried to fix one of the U bolts - out of curiosity. Worked well. I realise that it's probably not the smart thing to do given the time it takes, but this whole 'MGB thing' is not the smartest thing to do either and it's not about time or efficiency.
I gave the U bolt a cleanup with a wire brush and examined it. The thread was damaged only on one side and only about one third it's length - for about 10mm. There was another section, closer to the 'U' which was also worn, presumably from rubbing on the upper plate. I carefully laid a couple of welds along these sections with the MIG, holding it in the vise to draw the heat away.
Used a file to file them back to round and ran a die-nut (7/16" x 24) down over the thread. Cleaned them up beautifully and didn't take too long. I will definately do this to the others.
The more I use the Mig the easier it becomes and the more precise I can be.
I'm very confident I'll be able to fix any of the parts of the rear suspension that are worn.
One note, I'm pretty sure that these parts are worn because they've been allowed to come loose and the car's still been driven.
