After posing the question on the forum and waiting for a repy, I decided to finish off the fuel tank/ pump connection.
When I had Pirtek make new fuel hoses for the pump, I decided to run two hoses to the pump. There had only been one before, the connection from the tank to the pump being a fixed pipe connection.
The hose from the front line to pump did not cause any problems but the other one, from the tank was a little more problematic. I had difficulty in determining just how long the pipe had to be and I ended up making it a little too long. The main problem, however was the sharpness of the bend required to comfortably turn into the fuel pump. I couldn't get the hose to bend that sharp.
I ended up discarding the new hose and using some fittings I had at home a made a short pipe with the appropriate bend about 150mm long and used it to attach to the pump.
I attacked the clutch cylinders after soaking them in Kero. overnight and eventually got them apart.
The cylinders are in poor condition and if they were brake cylinders I'd replace them.
But I cleaned them up with 1000 wet and dry and I will use them. I have the kits for them somewhere and I might assemble them on Wednesday.
After receiving some help from the forum re: carbs, I discussed them with David and re-read the manual.
It became obvious that the jets were not adjusted at all and after following the procedure suggested by Hap, with some credence taken from the manual, I adjusted the jets 2 turns down after bringing them to flush, then having put some fuel in the tank and connecting power to the pump, I started the motor.
Ran brilliantly. I tried to tune as per the manual, but I couldn't get it to run any better so I left it as it was. Pressure 80lbs and steady and temperature about 80c and reasonably steady, although it did climb to 90c as the motor got hotter.
I'm very pleased with it and I can now move on to something else.
There was/is one issue that I am annoyed at myself about and that's the rubbish that must have been in the tank. I flushed the tank out but there must have sgtill been some rubbish in there. I should have thought of this and run the first litre or two into a bucket and disgarded it. The front fuel bowl overflowed and when I took it of the bowl was full of rubbish. It took me some time to clean both of them out and then I ran about two litres of fuel into a clear bottle to check the fuel clarity. Initially it was a bit milky but it cleared up and I discarded that bit of fuel.
I'll buy a generic fuel filter and put it just before the carburettors tomorrow.
