Started with the cleaning and painting and did one area under the passenger seat. Used a heat gun and scraper then a wire brush cup. Wiped it over with POR solvent and painted that little section with grey POR-15. Just to see the final result. Looks good so far. Lots of cleaning/painting to go. As there is so much oil and grease, the main issue is getting rid of that. The wire brush tends to just move it around, not get rid of it.
I think I'm going to be using lots of solvent.
I tried putting some in a little pump spray bottle and with that in one hand and a rag in the other I was able to wipe it pretty clean rotating the rag and discarding when there's no more clean cloth left.
Next day did a bit more. Came across some evidence that rust has been here and has been dealt with in different ways. Some evidence that there is other damage that has been filled also. Will probably leave it as is and simply flood with fishoil or something similar. Still a long way to go, but I've decided that I'm not going to attempt to get it perfect - just servicable.
All seals will have to be replaced and I'm sure that many drain holes have been filled. This is not what I want and I will be making sure that there is more drainage, not less. I'm working on the principal that trying to exclude moisture is impossible - so I want it to be able to drain away easily.
The POR-15 is working well, however, there is still an issue with the removal of grease and oil. That seems to be the biggest hurdle and the only solution I see is lots of solvent and lots of rags.
Getting into all the 'nooks and crannies' with the wire brush is difficult. In some cases impossible. In these areas hand scraping and lots of solvent cleaning seems to be the only solution.
