Removing The Large Thin Nut On A Spridget Rear Axle

Posted on: Sunday January 31, 2021

IMG 4279

The large thin nut on the Spridget rear axle is tough to remove and tighten adequately. Sockets with their beveled edge tend to slip off the nut. I bought a 1 7/8" socket for a nominal price at a local thrift store. I chucked it in the lathe and removed the beveled portion of the opening of the socket. The modified socket is much easier to use with a long pull bar or torque wrench. It does not slip off. I did the same for a 1 5/16" socket to remove and tighten the camshaft nut, also a...

Spridget Transmission Front Plate Quick And Easy Fix

Posted on: Thursday November 19, 2020

plate 1

If the front cover on your transmission has the threads stripped for the bolt that secures the lever, here is an easy fix. No need to buy a $100++ replacement plate from your favorite parts house. Please read all the way through before proceeding with the fix. It can be done with the front cover mounted to the transmission. Go to your local hardware store and buy a 5/16” fine thread bolt 2” long. The un-threaded section (the barrel) should be about 1” long. Get two 5/16” fine...

Set up the assembly on the bench and by the time you have picked it up and moved it over the head several rockers or mounting stands have rotated and you can't get on the head. Several years ago I hit upon a solution: set up the rocker assembly on the bench and place a ruler on top of the rockers. Hold the ruler firmly on the assembly and the whole thing...

Installing Cam Followers (tappet) In A 1275 Engine

Cam follower installation hint 1

If your fingers are getting stiff from arthritis like mine you probably find it more difficult to install the cam followers in a 1275 engine. With installation lube everywhere they are slippery to hold and navigate into the proper position to drop in. I have used a pushrod to push up the cam followers for removal but not until today did I think of using one for installation. Of course the engine is upside down for this procedure. Push the pushrod up through the cam follower hole as...
